….to say “thank you” for being the church, the Body of Christ, the presence of Our Lord, right here! This past week, we attended our Annual Synod Assembly in Chattanooga (where we’ll meet for the next 5 years if anyone wants to book early).

Our theme this year comes from our ELCA Bishop Eaton’s church wide initiative. We are church for the sake of the world.

Which is to say that while we are here for ourselves, we are here more so for others. And we’re not just here. We have branch offices all over this country and the world. And we are connected to each other (we have more branches than RBC). Indeed, we are church for the sake of the world. Thank you for that.

In May we had another wonderful Music Sunday, a grand celebration of everyone who so willingly share their talents to enhance our life and worship together. We are blessed.

This month we have our annual Music Camp (June 12-14). This is both a marvelous opportunity for, and a gift to, our young people. Sandra does wonderful work with our young people. Sign up your children or grandchildren and their friends. They will be blessed.

And this month we celebrated the Rite of Confirmation for four of our young people:
Jackson Beavers, Sarah Dhom, Shelby Folger and Jadon Mace. It was an important moment in their young lives. When they were baptized, their parents made specific promises on their behalf. On Sunday they affirmed the promise our God made to them (and to us) in Holy Baptism, and made some promises for themselves.

Basically, they promised these things:
1. To live among God’s faithful people
2. To hear God’s Word and share in His Supper
3. To proclaim the Good News of God in Christ through word and deed
4. To serve all people following the example of our Lord Jesus
5. To strive for justice and peace in all the earth
As we shared that moment with them, I hope that each of us renewed our commitment to these very same promises. Congratulations to Sarah, Shelby, Jackson and Jadon.

And the final secret of theses promises, I think, is this: that the words “You shall love the Lord your God” became in the end less a command than a promise. And the promise is that, on our weary feet of faith and fragile wings of hope, as we seek to live those promises of confirmation, we will come to love our God at last, as He has loved us from the first. And, that loving Him, we will come at last to love each other, too.

“And these words I command you this day shall be upon your heart, and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way and when you rise.” (Dev. 6:6,7)

And rise we shall, every last one of us, even as Christ rose before us. That is the promise, the greatest of all promises.

Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you,
Your Pastor and Friend,
David B. Hunter, Sr.

Thought of the Month

The best memories are the ones that you try to explain…
But in the end you just say you had to be there!

2017 Confirmation

Four of our teenage members will be confirmed during the late service on Pentecost Sunday, June 4th. The Rite of Confirmation is a sacred time in the lives of these young people as they will publicly vow their faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through the affirmation of their baptism. Let us support them with or prayers and encourage them as they take this significant step in their faith journey.

Those to be confirmed:
Jackson Beavers, Sarah Dhom,
Shelby Folger and Jadon Mace

Confircamp – June 25-July 1

This camp is at Lutheridge for those confirmation students entering their second year of class.

Mark your calendar and join us July 9th-13th for Maker Fun Factory VBS

At Maker Fun Factory, kids discover that God made them— and for a purpose! Kids participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, experience one-of-a-kind Bible adventures, collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them of God’s love, and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos they’ll take home and play with. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes with the Funshop Finale that gets everyone involved in living what they’ve learned. If you have any questions or would like to help out with VBS, contact Cyndi Warren or Angie Chandler. And there will be adult bible school studies as well.

Music Camp 2017

Music Camp is scheduled for June 12-14 adn is designed for children who have completed grades 1-5. If uyou are interested or have any questions, please contact Sandra Prichard.

WELCA NEWS

May marks the start of the WELCA School Kit drive in support of Lutheran World Relief.
The drive will continue through July. Imagine having to choose between a meal or
purchasing a notebook. School Kits are sent to places where even the few required school supplies may be more than a family can afford. Pencils and paper can help write a positive future. Beginning May 1, we will have the drawstring backpacks with the list of needed items inside hanging on the “trees” in both the Narthex and the Gathering Area in Reiser Hall. As in the past, please take a bag and fill it with the needed items. Please do not add other items or leave out any of the listed items. Once filled, return them to the church and hang them on a “tree”. A list of the items can be picked up in the Gathering Area or the Narthex. Should you prefer to make donations that can be applied to purchase needed items, please contact Monica Proctor.
