A Short Note, Dear Friends…

….to say thank you for a marvelous Christmas season. “A Night in Bethlehem” was exceptional; your response to sharing the joy of Christmas with those less fortunate was grand and generous, and our Christmas Eve worship was uplifting and inspiring. It truly is/was the experience of Christmas. Many thanks to each of you who worked so faithfully and shared your talent so willingly to provide the opportunity for all to experience the miracle of Christmas. Thank you.

….each year we decorate our sanctuary with poinsettias in memory of or in honor of our loved ones. It is an important part of Christmas at Resurrection Church. Do you know the story of the poinsettia?

It is named for Joel Roberts Poinsett. He spent his life as a South Carolina politician. He lived from 1779 to 1851. He was elected to Congress, but served most of his public life as a diplomat to various countries south of the border. Most notably, he served in Mexico. He managed to make a general nuisance of himself muddling in Mexican politics and was finally invited to leave.

In his return to these United States, he brought a flowering plant which was labeled “euphoria pulcherrima” but which quickly became known as the poinsettia! Its vivid red and green leaves quickly made it the plant of choice for Christmas.

What you might not know, because it is removed rather quickly after Christmas, is that the poinsettia is a very enduring plant. With some encouragement and minimal care, a poinsettia is tough. One writer described them, “…they have the life span of a sea turtle and are as ferocious as cacti. Even if neglected, they will hang on and on and on. Encouraged they can become bushes sixteen feet high.

I like the toughness of the poinsettia. It is appropriate for Christmas because it is a symbol of hope that endures and hope is the very heart of Christmas – our hope rooted in Jesus Christ.

And the poinsettia can also symbolize our expectations as we begin a new year – we are truly hopeful as we begin our 2016 journey. May 2016 be a year of blessed and blessing for each of you.

We are thankful and appreciative of your many kindnesses during the Christmas season and I hope you will drop in on Epiphany.

Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you.

Your pastor and friend

Let us remember those who are, at this time, confined

to a nursing home or to their own home.

A visit or a card would mean so much.
