A Short Note, Dear Friends…
…. To say, as I write this, we are preparing for Christmas in July (which is actually in July this year). It is a Christmas celebration, indeed, as we gather gifts (school supplies and money) for the students at Craig-Houghton Elementary School. We have done this for several years and the students, their families, and their teachers greatly appreciate the much-needed help.
Along those same lines, our WELCA has now collected 80 school kits (our goal is 100) for Lutheran World Relief and we recently sent LWR more than 100 health kits.
Thank you for your generous response to the needs of others.
June was a very busy month with Music Camp, Vacation Bible School, and Campfirmation at Lutheridge. These are important ministries, especially for our young people. Additionally, two of our teenagers, Shelby Folger and Madison Walling attended the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit in July along with their advisors. The gathering was an inspiring and eye-opening experience – 30,000+ young Lutherans gathered together!
Thank you for supporting our ongoing ministries to youth and children.
August is the new September. That is, it has become the back-to-school month for many states. For us, the hope is that August will be a relatively calm month before we shift gears in September.
On Wednesday, June 17, we awakened to the news of an horrific and tragic hate crime in Charleston, South Carolina. In the hours immediately following, our nation awaited the response. Incredibly, the families of the victims, the black clergy and churches, the local and state leaders, and the entire Charleston community responded in an heroic, inspiring, and Christian manner.
The families acknowledged their great hurt and loss and pain, and, in the very next breath, they extended forgiveness to a very deeply troubled young man. The clergy and political leaders forged a movement of unity and reconciliation.
They literally changed a developing narrative in our nation, transforming a story of mistrust and revenge and violence into the story of Jesus, the Christian story, the story of love and grace and mercy and forgiveness and reconciliation. Each of us should be profoundly affected by their incredible witness to their Christian faith and we must continue to tell this story, with our actions and our words. Why? Because everyone needs to hear and embrace the story of God’s unconditional love in Jesus Christ. And we are the tellers of that story.
Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you,
Your pastor and friend

WELCA NEWS

80+ and Counting!! Because of your ongoing generosity WELCA is able to report that we already have 50 School Kits in hand. There are enough backpacks on hand in the Narthex and the Gathering area of Reiser Hall to get us to a total of 100 if we can get them all filled. Please consider taking one of the bags and following the shopping list you will find inside. Return the bags to the church by Sunday, August 16th so that they can be delivered on time to Lutheran World Relief . Call Lee Burnett at 706-993-0685 should you have questions. Thank you so much!
