…to say we’re off and running again. Our “church year” began with Rally Day. A thank-you to everyone who made it happen and to everyone who participates in the many ministries of our church.

At the recent Southeastern Synod WELCA Convention in Nashville, Tara Spray was elected Vice-President for a two year term. Our WELCA are very active in ministries that serve others, here in our community and around the world.

In addition to getting everything up to speed again, we also had a very enjoyable Luther Dinner Theater. We will follow that up with a “Marty Party” and Dinner on the Grounds, October 8th. We will also celebrate Oktoberfest on the 21st and have two special worship opportunities. On Monday, October 1st, we will participate with seven other congregations in a worship service commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. And on Reformation Sunday, October 29th, we will host the CSRA Joint Reformation Service at 7:00 p.m. with pre-service music beginning at 6:45 p.m.

For me, a very important and meaningful part of our worship service is that short silence we observe during the confession. Specifically, it is a time (30 seconds or so) for silence and self-examination. It’s a time when we address the God “to whom all desires are known and from whom no secrets are hid.” No secrets? Really?

Remember when Jesus met the women at the well and, basically, told her about her checkered past? One might thank she would be offended in some way, but the exact opposite was, in fact, the case. She runs all over town telling folks, “Hey y’all. Come see a guy who told me everything I’ve ever done!” She’s genuinely excited that someone knows her personal shortcomings, and loves her completely despite them.

The possibility of an honest examination of our mistakes is a very good reason to be in church in the first place. Those 30 seconds offer a chance for meaning, repentance and grace. Truly, a real moment of worship in the midst of real lives.

Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you.

Your pastor and friend,

David Hunter

Thought of the Month

“I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.” ~Martin Luther

REFORMATION 500

This year marks 500 years since a stubborn monk and towering thinker, Martin Luther, published his 95 theses and launched the Protestant Reformation. Join us as we continue our celebration of REFORMATION 500!

Dinner on the Grounds and Marty Party- October 8th

In addition to our annual Dinner on the Grounds, join us for some fun activities for all ages. Don’t forget to bring a covered-dish…meat and drinks provided.

Following the late service we would like to gather on the steps in front of the church to take a congregational picture. This picture, along with other congregational pictures from around the world, will be projected on a screen in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany, where Luther’s protest 500 years ago changed the history of the world.

If you have a 500th Anniversary t-shirt you are encouraged to wear it that day….or red for the reformation!

Oktoberfest and Red Door Cafe

Our Annual Oktoberfest with a “Reformation” flare. Saturday, October 21st, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Come and join us for the fun and fellowship!
Reservations are needed…You can call the church office or fill out an insert in the bulletin.

Special Reformation Service

Join us on Sunday, October 29th, as we celebrate together the 500th year of our Lutheran Heritage.

Pre-Service Music will begin at 6:45 p.m.
The Service will begin at 7:00 p.m.
with a reception in Reiser Hall to follow.

Trunk or Treat

It’s time for Trunk or Treat, Wednesday, October 25th. Our parking lot will be transformed into a cavalcade of cars featuring decorated trunks for our children to go “Trunk-or-Treating.” In order for this to work we need your help or should we say “your trunk!” You can decorate your trunk however you wish…use your imagination. And you don’t have to have children to be involved….the more trunks the more fun it is. There will be someone in the parking lot on that evening helping park the cars in two lines. You will need to have your trunks decorated and “ready for business” at 6:30 when we turn the children loose to “Trunk-or-Treat!!”

If you are planning to decorate your trunk and be a part of this fun, please call the church office or let Cyndi or Cindy know. This will give us some idea of how many trunks to plan for. If you have any questions please call the church office.

LutherLegends Outing
– Adult Trip

Join us for lunch on Thursday, October 12th at 12:00 p.m. at the Village Deli in Daniel Village. Come join the fellowship!!

WELCA NEWS

Fall! What a great time to be in Nashville, TN to attend the 30th Annual Convention of the Southeastern Synod Women of the ELCA representing all the ladies of Resurrection. We stayed at the beautiful Opryland Inn located across from the Grand Ole Opry, (which we did not have time to see). We arrived Thursday afternoon after an eight hour drive in time to help with registration. By Saturday noon, the four of us Kathie, Miriam, Tara and Anne, had helped to register almost 200 participants, voting members, clergy, guest speakers and one Bishop.
Friday thru Sunday we attended 2 business meetings, Bible Study, workshops and worship services daily. We had 2 hours of free time on Saturday. The banquet was held in the hotel restaurant where the servers “sang for their supper.” The bartender did a mean Elvis impersonation. A photo session began at 5:30 pm including pictures with Martin and Katharina Luther (cardboard figures someone had made). The banquet dinner began at 7:00 pm with the servers entertaining us for several hours.
Sunday morning began at 8:00 am with breakfast and a final business meeting at 9:00 am and a closing communion service at 10:00 am. Most of the ladies checked out and headed home at 11:00 am, but since Tara had volunteered to fill in for the current Vice President, who was leaving the ELCA and could no longer serve as Vice President, she had to stay for a lunch and board meeting. We finally got on the road to go home about 2:00 pm. losing an hour coming back into the Eastern Time zone, we all got home by 11:00 pm that evening!
We thank you for your prayers, support and allowing us to represent all the ladies of Resurrection. A lot was accomplished and we appreciate your support of all WELCA’s projects in 2017-2018.
Your friends in Christ,
Kathie Hunter, Miriam Lang, Anne Spray, Tara Spray
