I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk, and judge only their actions.
~Dorothy Day

….to say thank you for your continued support and participation in Christ’s ministry at Resurrection Church. October was a gathering month. We gathered together for our Annual Dinner on the Grounds and for that time-honored German tradition, Oktoberfest (which was also the first of several “Red Door Cafe” dining experiences which will help send our youth to the 2017 ELCA National Youth Gathering in Houston).

….thank you, too, for a wondrous Reformation Day celebration. Our festive worship was inspiring. The music surely would have please Dr. Luther, himself. It was just outstanding. And we added two more little Lutherans. The Joint Reformation Service was hosted by Lutheran Church by the Lake in McCormick. They were so proud and delighted to host us at their church.

And in the midst of all that, we again participated in the Downtown Tour of Churches, which was well received this year. All together, we were busy everywhere.

November is the month of significant liturgical days: All Saints’ Day, Christ the King Sunday (the last day in the liturgical year) and the beginning of Advent (the first day in the liturgical year). It is also our National Thanksgiving Day celebration.

November will also be our Annual Stewardship emphasis. This year’s theme is “How Shall We Live?” We will have Temple Talks on the 8th, 15th, and 22nd (my favorite part) and Commitment Sunday will be on November 22nd, Christ the King Sunday – sort of a “pre-Thanksgiving” thanksgiving. I want to thank each of you for making our church vital and strong.

I want to return for a moment to All Saints’ Sunday. Saints, as I know you already know, aren’t just those who have died. Rather, saints are those who have been declared holy, or as one of our young person’s said so very well, “saints are people whose sins have been forgiven.” That makes it easy for us to see that this “declaring holy” is God’s work. We are not holy (or forgiven) because of some inherent quality or something we have done, but simply because God calls us holy.

That does raise the question: What does it mean to be holy? The bible suggests that doing the work of God is holy. And here’s the thing, whenever we do the things we do the way Christ would do them, we are doing the work of God.

Changing the diapers of our child or someone else’s child in the nursery; befriending a kid at school that others exclude; volunteering to help another – a child, a kid, team, the scouts, a neighbor who has a hard time getting out, or….well, you get the idea.

So often we think that words like “holy” or “saints’” are reserved for church stuff when they, in fact, apply to all of life, any moment can be transformed when we see and share God’s care for His world and His people. All Saints’ Sunday, remember that you are a saint of God in the variety of settings and spaces in which you find yourself.

Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you.

Your pastor and friend,

Let us remember those who are, at this time, confined

to a nursing home or to their own home.

A visit or a card would mean so much.

WELCA NEWS

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We need someone to help with Lutheran World Relief (LWR). The job includes helping to sort and fill school kit bags, and health care kit bags, and buying items to fill the bags. Each kit has to be checked, packed, and prepared for shipping. If you could help with one or more of these tasks, please contact Anne Spray or Miriam Lang.

Lauren Jones has volunteered to handle our GREETING CARD program. We need your old greeting cards to send to the children’s hospitals where they are used for children’s crafts. Please cut the front covers off any card, Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, etc. There is a basket beneath the WELCA bulletin board for the cards.

We continue to help RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE with needed items for the kitchen and/or cleaning supplies. If you would like to donate any of these items or have questions please contact Anne Spray or Miriam Lang. Please remember to collect the tabs from aluminum cans. We collected over 25 pounds in 2014. Thanks for your support.

Thanks-Doing

The French word for thanksgiving is Fete d’ actions de grace or literally, “feast of thanks actions.” When we give thanks, as well as celebrating all that we have received, what can we do to show our gratitude to God? Not just one day, but all year long? How can our thanks-giving become thanks-doing?
