A short note, dear friends,

…to say Christ is Risen! He is Risen, Indeed! Easter is the day that gives us a great hope –
a hope to our hearts, to our faith, and to our lives.

This year’s Lent, Holy Week, and Easter worship were especially inspiring. And your active
participation was most important of all. Worship is our number one priority in this church and
I am grateful to you for that.

Our celebration of Easter was magnificent. I want to thank all of you who were so diligent and
faithful for your attention to all of the details, the worship preparations and rehearsals and
the behind the scenes tasks. Our staff was outstanding and the volunteers were numerous
and good-spirited. A tip of the halo and a hearty thanks to all of you who made Easter such
a glorious experience of worship and praise. I thank God for the privilege to be part
of such a wonderful church and people.

This month we have three important celebrations, Music Sunday and Mother’s Day, and also
our Synod Assembly in Chattanooga.

Music Sunday is May 7th – the Sunday when we feature all of our choirs at worship,
and since we combine both services for that day, it is a powerful worship experience, indeed!

And the following Sunday is Mother’s Day. It is and should be a day of joy and gratitude. You’ve
heard the old saying, “The hand that rocks the cradle rocks the world.” I still believe that to be
the case. When I think of my own life, I see the clear influence of my mother’s hand and heart. My
earliest and most lasting lessons of faith came from her. She taught me the power and importance
of regular prayer and worship and she loved my sisters and me unconditionally. It is indeed
right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places honor and give thanks to our
mothers.

Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you,

Your pastor and friend

WELCA NEWS

The ANNUAL SPRING LUNCHEON was well attended and enjoyed by many last month. Our program included a film presentation of MIKE PRIEBE’S MISSION MINISTRY. Everyone had a great time and as always the food and fellowship was great!
St. James Lutheran Church and Resurrection WELCA units were hosts of the ANNUAL EBENEZER CLUSTER OF THE WOMEN OF THE ELCA on April 28th – 29th. About 60 ladies were in attendance. The event included business, speakers, stretch and sing, crafts, bible study, lunch, installation of officers, and ended with a communion worship service. A CLUSTER is a term given to a grouping established by the ELCA for the purpose of fostering interdependent relationships among congregations and church wide units for mission purposes. The Southeastern Synod includes Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee and is then divided into 9 cluster units. There are 10 clusters in our unit. There were four ladies from our congregational unit attended the meeting.
30TH ANNUAL CONVENTION OF SOUTHEASTERN SYNOD WOMEN OF THE ELCA will be September 15th – 17th, 2017 in Nashville, TN. Registration has begun so if you are interested in attending please contact Miriam Lang or Anne Spray.
The next WELCA board meeting will be 5/5/17 at 1:00pm in Reiser Hall. The minutes and financial report of the last board meeting are posted on the WELCA bulletin board.
LOVE CIRCLE will not meet during the months of June, July, and August. We will resume after Rally Sunday. Enjoy your summer!

Lutheran World Relief
May marks the start of the WELCA School Kit drive in support of Lutheran World Relief. The drive will continue through July. Imagine having to choose between a meal or purchasing a notebook. School Kits are sent to places where even the few required school supplies may be more than a family can afford. Pencils and paper can help write a positive future.

Beginning May 1, we will have the drawstring backpacks with the list of needed items inside hanging on the “trees” in both the Narthex and the Gathering Area in Reiser Hall. As in the past, please take a bag and fill it with the needed items. Please do not add other items or leave out any of the listed items. Once filled, return them to the church and hang them on a “tree”.
Should you prefer to make donations that can be applied to purchase needed items, please contact Monica Proctor.

Below is a list of the needed items:
Four (4) 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8” x 10 ½”;
no loose leaf paper
One (1) 30-centimeter ruler or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
One (1) pencil sharpener
One (1) pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
Five (5) unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band
Five (5) black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band
One (1) box of 16 or 24 crayons
One (1) 2 ½” eraser
One (1) sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag (provided by WELCA)

Please do not donate items with any religious symbols, messages, our church name or any items decorated with a U. S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage.

Also, we would like to thank you for your support of the Health Kit project this year!
