A Short Note, Dear Friends…

….to say, “Happy New Year.” Thank you for your kindness during Christmas to our staff and to me. Your appreciation and caring is truly a blessing.

Thank you, too, to everyone who worked so willingly and wonderfully to enable our Christmas celebrations, the Christmas Program and Christmas Eve Services. And thank you, too, to each of you who participated in the joyous celebrations.

Just two more things:
First, if you have not yet made your pledge to our 2019 budget, please do so today. Sometimes things tend to slide at the year’s beginning. However, 2019 curtain has risen, we need to be sure the play is finished. Thank you in advance for doing so.

Lastly, each Christmas Eve one of you always observes that it would be so nice if worship were like this every year. I don’t usually mention it but today I want to say that they’re right. That is to say that, while we most certainly have visitors, the great majority of folk who gather at Christmas and Easter and give our worship such power, are members of this church.

I am expressing a growing concern and that is our attendance at worship. Worship is the heart of the life of the Christian and it is the heart of our church life. Evelyn Underhill said this about worship…

“Many a congregation when it assembles in church must look to the angels like a muddy, puddle,
shore at low tide; littered with every kind of rubbish and odds and ends – a distressing sort of spectacle. And then the tide of worship comes in and it’s all gone; the dead sea urchins and jellyfish, the paper and empty cans and nameless bit of rubbish. The cleansing sea flows over the whole lot. So we are released from a narrow selfish outlook on the universe by a common act of worship.”

Worship does deliver us from “a narrow selfish outlook.” We do need our sights lifted in worship and some of you are not regularly availing yourselves of that privilege. I cannot understand why. I can only urge, plead, challenge, and advise, but the decision to come is yours. We have missed you, we care about you, and you know without my saying so, that you should be here in worship. Worship provides a place where all of us can say thank you to God for His blessings and the gift of life. Don’t miss it. When we say thank you, our praise and service to God will follow naturally as we worship.

Please keep us in your prayers and with blessings and prayers for everything good, I am…..

Your Pastor and friend,
David B. Hunter

WELCA NEWS

All women of Resurrection are invited to the annual EPIPHANY LUNCHEON on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 12:00. As we will not have use of Reiser Hall, the luncheon will be held at Advent Lutheran Church, 3232 Washington Road, Augusta, GA, in their fellowship hall which is in the rear of the church. We’ve invited the ladies of Advent to join us.

Our Speaker will be our own CAROL PAGE. She is the Director of the South Carolina Assistive Technology Program at the USC School of Medicine. She will speak to us about independence in activities of daily living affected by the gradual and sometimes sudden consequences of aging. Her presentation is titled “Gizmos and Gadgets” and the audience will have an opportunity to participate. You won’t want to miss it.

We are asking everyone to bring your favorite nativity to share and tell us how it came to belong to you. We ask that everyone bring a side dish or dessert to share; the meat will be provided. Please consider inviting family and friends to attend with you.

We continue to collect SOAP and PULL TABS year round as well as items for the RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE and used GREETING CARDS.

We will begin collecting PERSONAL HEALTH CARE KITS in February. More information to come in next month’s Resurrection Notes.
