A Short Note, Dear Friends…

….to say I trust you have had a blessed Christmas season. Christmas is wonderful and it is also demanding! Our Advent worship, the Children and Youth Christmas program and our Christmas Eve Services were magnificent and inspiring – together they provided a context for each of us to experience the Christmas miracle. Thank you one and all.

….this could not be accomplished without the countless volunteers who are so involved behind the scenes. I thank all of them and our staff for their strong efforts. I want to say a special word of thanks to our music staff and the members of each of our choirs. They carry an enormous load during this time of year and we need to express our gratitude to them.

….I do want to say thank you for your response to the ELCA Good Gifts, the Blessing Boxes, Toys for Tots, the Mitten Tree, and the Salvation Army Kettle and our many other benevolences throughout the year. They are examples of the generosity and willingness in our church.

….and to say Happy New Year. 2017 is now history. 2018 is a promise and a possibility.

There are some who say that history is “His Story,” meaning that as events unfold it is the telling of the story of God at work in us and through us. I am confident that God is at work in our church and that He is leading us to write a new chapter in His-Story.

In 2017 we had two special task forces at work envisioning our future direction and the ministry/infrastructure needs to move boldly forward.

If we look closely at the beginning of Christianity, we notice that Jesus really did very little, if anything, to design a great institution. Rather, the church grew spontaneously, naturally as the followers of Jesus responded to the new and changing needs of a world that was constantly changing, and in which they did the best they could to act in the name of Jesus.

In our time, the church faces at least as great a challenge as those early followers of Jesus. I, for one, am sure that we can and will rise to the challenge. Christ’s spirit is alive in the world. All that is needed are women and men who, remembering Jesus, are willing to do everything in their power to be of use to Him, to bring compassion in place of compulsion, to sacrifice, and to go into the circumstances and situations of their daily lives as Christ’s reconciling agents. He can find such people. He can find some of them right here.

Lastly, I want to thank all of you for your many kindnesses – all evidence of your love and concern. We feel very much a part of your lives and you are a part of ours.

Please keep us in your prayers and with blessings and prayers for everything good, I am…..

Your Pastor and friend,

David Hunter
