An ELCA Church serving the Augusta, Georgia area

Helping Craig-Houghton Elementary

Our church has a tradition of assisting the Craig-Houghton Elementary School through our Christmas in July/August ministry. This school is the neediest school in the Richmond County system by almost every measure. Understandably, many of these students struggle academically.
A non-profit organization known as Heeling in Fashion Foundation (HIFF) has been conducting after-school tutoring at Craig-Houghton for students in need. HIFF works with teachers and school administrators to identify students in need, and then coordinates with parents to schedule the tutoring sessions. The program has been very successful.
A great opportunity has been presented to us recently. HIFF is looking for a partner to help conduct Saturday camp, away from the school campus, for Craig-Houghton students. The vision for this camp would be to focus on tutoring and mentoring, with games and recreational activities offered as well. An HIFF employee would be present at all times. The local HIFF leader has met with your Church Council and outlined her ideas. Council is very interested in this opportunity, which would be a fitting ministry for our downtown church.
The camp would be approximately three hours on Saturday morning, concluding with a lunch. Such a program would, of course, require church volunteers and a coordinator (or coordinators) to schedule the volunteers.
The Council and Pastor would very much like to hear your thoughts on this proposal. If you have any questions, or if you are interested in helping develop the process, contact your Council President (Ken Dyar: 706-592-6670 or 1976kcd@gmail.com).
