A Short Note, Dear Friends …
. . . . we celebrated five baptisms in November, our national month of Thanksgiving. I am always thankful and excited when we have a baptism. It’s not only because baptism is the visible gospel in miniature- our God coming to and laying claim to one of His beloved children who cannot yet respond to Him in anyway; it’s not only because God’s grace is poured into a new life forever by God’s Holy Spirit, and it’s not even because the children and adults are so important to us. I’m thankful because whenever we baptize, we are doing something we know Jesus wants us to do, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Thank you.

…. this month we also got started on next month, that is, we have started rehearsals for the Children and Youth Christmas program; we made our Christmas crafts on Advent Night, and we kicked off our Joy of Christmas ministries: the ELCA “Good Gifts” and the Action Ministries Blessings Bags on the giving tree in the Gathering Area, as well as our traditional Mitten Tree.

December will be a busy month in our lives and at Resurrection. There will be Christmas Luncheons (WELCA 12/2; Adult Christmas 12/14); the Hanging of the Greens (decorating the church) on 12/13 after supper and all of the rehearsals and preparation for the Christmas program and the festive Christmas Worship celebrations.

Speaking of worship on Christmas Eve, since that is a Sunday, we will have ONE worship service at 10:00 a.m. in the morning (our regular Sunday worship) since we’ll have our 5:00p.m. Family Christmas Service and the Christmas Candlelight Worship beginning with the pre-service music at 10:30 p.m.

In this 500″‘ anniversary year of the Reformation, we have focused a great deal on Martin Luther, as we should, being Lutheran. In his explanation of the first article of the Apostles’ Creed, Luther wrote:

I hold and believe that I am God’s creature, that is, that God has given me and constantly sustains my body, soul, and life, my members great and small, all my senses, my reason and understanding, and the like; my food and drink, clothing, nourishment, spouse and children, servants, house and farm, etc. Besides, God makes all creation help pravide the benefits and necessities of life- sun, moon, and stars in the heavens; day and night; air, fire, water, the earth and all that it yields and brings forth; birds, fish, animals, grain, and all sorts of produce. Moreaver, God gives all physical and temporal blessings- good gavernment, peace, security.

In focusing on God’s role as a benevolent creator, Luther not only reminds us of all the reasons we have to be thankful to God, but more importantly, of all that God has given us. Indeed, “God so loved the world that He gave….”

This month we will also focus on God’s giving and our generous response to our God in our Annual Stewardship emphasis: “Songs of Stewardship.”

Oh, Worship the King (12/3); 0 Master, Let Me Walk You (12110); Take My Life That I May Be (12117)
On each of these Sundays we will experience the very special joy and inspiration of our members Temple Talks, and a thematic emphasis in the sermons.

Commitment Sunday will be December 17″‘ when we will make our promises and pledges to Christ’s ministry for the coming year. One of the many blessings we enjoy in this church is your generous support of many ministries. I thank you for that generous and inspiring blessing. In this church, we love because God first loved us.

Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you.
Your pastor and friend,

David B. Hunter
