…Thank you for being God’s people at Resurrection Church. The out-pouring of love, concern and support for our members/families who must walk through the valley of the shadows is not just wonderful, it is Christian. Thank you.

…We are in the midst of our Lenten season. I hope you have tried the suggested fast and would like to hear your experiences/observations. Palm Sunday is the 9th, a week from this Sunday. Since we are using the Narrative Lectionary, Palm Sunday will be Palm Sunday, not Passion Sunday this year. We will have a traditional Holy Week and Easter celebration. Two specific reminders – the Sunrise Service at the Jessye Norman Amphitheater and, this year, (due to a large sporting event), the Easter Egg hunt will be held on Saturday, April 15th. So…when you get to thinking there’s something you have to do on April 15th, there is – the Easter Egg Hunt.

I want to make you aware of City Serve Augusta which will be held on April 29th. It is an iniative to help organize local churches, non-profits, and community leaders to partner together to address community needs. We seek to do this while promoting unity, diversity, and community that could lead to ongoing partnership in Christ’s name. You can find a list of projects currently planned and sign up to volunteer on line at cityserve@cityhopealliance.org . One of the projects happens to be the Craig-Houghton Elementary School.

This week I’m focused on the Zacchaeus story in Luke. Most of us know this story through the fun little children’s song:
Zacchaeus was a wee, little man, a wee, little man was he.
He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see.
And as the Lord came passing by,he looked up in the tree,
And he said,”Zacchaeus, you come down from there,”
For I’m going to your house today. For I’m going to your house today.

Zacchaeus was curious. He wanted to see Jesus. Turns out Jesus was interested in Zacchaeus, too. He invites Zacchaeus to what will become for him a life changing experience. Luke tells us that, Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.”

To put it plainly, Zacchaeus’ heart was changed. Now that little song has only one verse, but I came across a second verse whose author is unknown and which seems to be a good “rest of the story” verse…

We’re just like the man Zacchaeus, up there in that tree,
Wondering what this man Jesus could want with you and me.
And as the Lord comes passing by, He looks into our hearts,
And He says, “People, you come down and I’ll come in and I’ll change your life.
I’ve given you a new heart today. Given you a new heart today.

What do you think?
Please keep us in your prayer and remember that we love you.

Your pastor and friend.
