A Short Note, Dear Friends…

….to say that I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Youth Sunday. It was a day of joy and celebration as we gave thanks together for the youth of this church. They are gifts of God’s grace to us. I thank Cyndi, Angie, Cindy, and Sandra and our young people – a tip of the halo to them all.

Well we have collectively conspired to do in the old joke about our Lutheran reluctance to change.

On Sunday, the 3rd, we voted to call Rev. Terri Landers to be our Associate Pastor. Terri has accepted our call and she will begin her ministry with us on Sunday, March 31st. She will also be installed that day. And then, on the 17th we received Rory, Tim and Evelyn Griffith as new members of our congregation and also had the official groundbreaking for the construction of New Reiser Hall.

We are now into the construction phase. As the walls of our beloved Reiser Hall come down, we will face many inconveniences, irritations, and disruptions of our routine. Construction is never easy. It has and will require patience from all of us.

As you struggle to find a parking space, or try to remember where the coffee pot might be, remember these changes are temporary. The bonds between members of this congregation are strong and we have committed to step boldly into the future together for God and for good. Our calling and partnership in God’s work has not changed. We will continue to serve our Lord each day in this community. And in the near future, New Reiser Hall will rise to new and greater possibilities for mission and ministry. Thank you for your patience and forbearance in the months ahead.

This past Saturday, our Church Council spent the day in retreat with Pastor John Mocko, an ELCA pastor and congregational coach. Pastor Mocko is able to lead us in a Congregational Vitality process in which we will consider prayerfully and biblically why it matters that we are Christians and why it matters that other people become Christians, too. It is an excellent approach to preparing us for our future ministry in that it is focused in our greatest ministry strength, each member of Resurrection Church. Our great challenge is to equip ourselves for ministry in a culture that is no longer Christian.

And lastly, our season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6th. This year’s Lenten Series is ”Jesus Now” because, well, we really need Jesus Now.

Please keep us in your prayers and remember that I love you.

Your pastor and friend,

David B. Hunter

The History Corner: The Lutheran Church –160 Years in Downtown Augusta
1859-2019

“The Evangelical lutheran Church of Augusta, Georgia” was organized on February 19, 1859. Missionaries had come to the Germans in Augusta as early as 1855, sent by the South Carolina Synod, but no congregation resulted from their efforts. Then Pastor Peter A. B. Meister came in 1859 on his own, and this time a congregation was formed. The best source of information about its beginning is “The History of St. Matthews Lutheran Church. It was written by Pastor William Finck in 1910, for the 50th anniversary of the completion of the church in 1860, a weeklong Golden Jubilee.

From it we learn that the first child baptized into the new congregation was Charles Theodore Pund, born January 29, 1859 and baptized in May 1859. The first couple married in the new church were Miss Mathilda Meister, daughter of the Pastor, and Mr. August Brenner, the organist. Organist for the wedding was Mr. August Roesel. The bridesmaid was Miss Elizabeth Meyer. The pipe organ in the rear balcony of the church at 548 Walker Street (at 6th) had been built by Peter Brenner, the organist’s brother.

The first four ministers of this German-speaking church were Peter Abraham Benjamin Meister, 1859-1863- Charles F. Bansemer, D.O., 1863-1866 – The Rev. Professor Diedrich Peter cammann, 1866-1875 – Rev. Theodor Koeberle, 1876-1885. Pastor Meister’s records only exist in personal Family Bibles and certifteates. The next two pastors recorded Baptisms, Confirmations, and Marriages, often including other family connections. Pastor Koeberle added Burials. There is a treasure of data for anyone who ties into the early families, and church history that would be interesting to anyone.

Book One of our records is in archaic German “Sutterlin script.” It was painstakingly translated by our members, George Roesel and Anneliese Childers. Some examples:

BAPTISM: Hains, Rosine Catharine. Born April 1, baptized April 14 1867. Daughter of John Conrad Hains and his wife Anna, nee Otterbein, both from Hessen, Darmstadt. Sponsors: Rosine Bender, wife of Johann Bender; Miss Catharine Evers, George’s daughter; Mr. Johann Bender. [Diedrich P. Camann]

MARRIAGE: 20 September 18n. Mr. Jolin Labouseur, Province of Hanover, Germany and Miss Christine Evers from Augusta, Georgia. [By Theodore Koeberle)

CONFIRMATION: April 1868. Catharina Elizabeth Bredenberg. born J_ 15, 1853 in Sandstedt, Hagan District, Kingdom of Hanover, daughter of Johann Jiirgen and Anne Friederike Freymuth Bredenberg. [By Diedrich P. Camann]

DEATH: Emma Koeberle. On December 19, 1883 my dear daughter Emma died in Los Angeles where she arrived December 3 with her dear mother and the other children. There she is resting until the day of resurrection. Praised be the Lord who in his infinite wisdom called our dear child to a better “Los Angeles” (City of Angels). She reached the age of 13 years and 11 months. Theodor Koeberle, Pastor. (4 of his 13 children died while he was in Augusta. 3 were infants.)
